Werdegang / Ausbildung:
The main focus of my work is the lived moment and how to accurately express its fleeting intensity with fluidity and economy. I try to convey a sense of ‘suddenness’ in my work – the immediacy of that moment of perception before there is time to decode the information and categorise it. Some works are completed directly in a few hours while others can take many months of reworking in the studio before I am satisfied. I want the works to look light and unlaboured, as if the work of a moment, belying the depth of emotion involved. I am always juggling spontaneity and control. Although I favour energy over academicism in painting, daily drawing is nonetheless an important aspect of my work and I have been life-drawing on a regular basis for over 25 years. I feel this helps me to respond rapidly and spontaneously to situations which occur when I am painting. I like to draw moving models- gesture and action are important to me.
I am interested in that sublime moment which occurs, often within the banal, in the recognition of a pattern by its essential elements. For example, a centipede of shopping trolleys snaking it’s way across a shopping centre car-park or the straight backs of cows, outlined on a ridge, all facing the same direction, or a moving life-model, have an equal and comparable visual attraction for me. My aim in painting is to express this as directly and honestly as possible with the exclusion of extraneous detail. I hope always to be surprised by the results.
